Kharkhorin, the old capital and mini Gobi trip

Kharakhorum was the capital of the Mongol Empire between 1235 and 1260. The Erdene Zuu Monastery, featuring 108 stupas(108 being a sacred number in Buddhism) is probably the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. They are part of the upper part of the World Heritage site Orkhon Valley.

  • Day 1
    Drive to visit Small Sand Dune (semi- Gobi)

    Overnight stay in a nomadic family’s ger. Electricity, shower, modern toilet, bank, supermarket is not available.

  • Day 2
    Drive to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital

    Visit to Erdenezuu Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. It was founded in 1586. Surrounded by a quadratic wall (420 m long on each side) with total 108 Stupas.
